Job Description:

 

Full time priest-in-charge position shared between two affiliated churches - Christ Church South Amboy and Trinity Church  Matawan, NJ. These two churches are 9 miles apart, approximately 18 minute drive. These two churches in the Episcopal Diocese of N.J. have joined together in an affiliation to share their common faith and ministry through a unified pastoral leadership team. Having a common vision to have our parishes jointly and respectively impact our shared geographical communities, we joyfully seek a full time priest in charge to provide leadership and vision to our combined church families. The churches will equally share in the financial support of the priest-in-charge but otherwise remain financially independent.

 

Our mutual church worship service schedule will be 5 PM on Saturday and 10 AM on Sunday. The Priest-in-charge will serve at both services with the site for each time alternating each week. The Deacon and guest celebrants will serve at the alternate time service. The churches are both broad church with similar average Sunday attendance of 50 per Sunday. Trinity Matawan employs the services of a Sunday Service music director who plays both organ and piano. Service music is also supplied by the multi-generational bell choir. Christ Church South Amboy uses recorded music. Both churches have enjoyed both preaching from the aisle as well  as the pulpit. We seek an engaged preacher who will help us to learn in Christ as we connect in our diverse communities where we all strive to live the Christian word.  Our congregations have enjoyed exploring each other’s services and learning new ways to connect within our congregations.

 

Each of the churches is well rooted in their respective communities. Each congregation is a mix of multiple-generation parishioners along with many newer members.  While the average parishioner age is 50 plus, each congregation has several younger families with children. There is an ongoing commitment to provide Church School as well as other youth focused activities such as Vacation Bible School and Holiday Pageants. Our communities are both racially and ethnically diverse offering an area rich with opportunities. Christ Church and Trinity Church have a combined membership of 230 members with  an  average combined annual income of $245,000. 

 

Both Christ Church, South Amboy and Trinity Church, Matawan have a strong commitment to community service.  Christ Church has been an active participant in the Way of St. Paul ………. Trinity Matawan has a long standing  monthly commitment to serve at a neighboring Episcopal Church food kitchen and also a cooking service project , “Breast Intentions” to provide a home church cooked meal to an individual receiving treatment for cancer. The church also support the Seaman’s Church institute through knitting goods and purchasing/delivering personal supplies to the Port. 

 

Trinity Church Matawan has a rectory adjoining the church. It is in a residential neighborhood with a very good public school system. Both Matawan and South Amboy are conveniently located with easy commuting to nearby communities as well as public transit via train, bus and ferry to New York City. Due to the proximity of NYC and Princeton, the potential to engage a seminarian in intern work is very strong. The Diocese of New Jersey is a vibrant diocese with a strong Diocesan support system for its clergy and congregations.
